Navy SEALs are the most highly trained military personnel in the special forces. SEALs are reserved for special missions that are the most important and the hardest to accomplish. Their name comes from the three natural elements that they are trained to cope with: sea, air, and land. In case, you were wondering how SEALs are able to put their minds and bodies through unthinkable or unbeatable missions and live to tell about it the next day, below are 7 techniques that Navy SEALs use to conquer natural elements.

Picture Specific Outcomes in the Mind

One of the most effective techniques when pushing your body to the limit is visualization. There are two ways in which visualization takes place: rehearsal and ideal state. In the rehearsal stage, the SEAL pictures themselves performing a certain skill to accomplishment. On the other hand, the ideal state is whereby the SEAL thinks about how they will feel once they master a specific skill in the future. Unlike fantasies, visualization is about seeing yourself overcome certain barriers.

Learning to Heighten Awareness and Regulate

The Navy SEAL learns how to pay attention to every single element of their surroundings without necessarily being a part of that scenario. There are at least 5 levels of situational awareness in the training phase. The first level is typically known as the white condition. The White Condition normally occurs when you’re daydreaming. Your heart rate at this point is 100 beats per minute (bpm).

There is the black condition whereby you freeze because what’s happening was so unexpected. Here the heart increases in beats to something around 175 bpm. Above that is the orange condition that allows you to be extra careful especially when you’re doing something that requires attention. Your heart rate is usually over 100 bpm. The red condition happens when you sense danger and feel a sudden adrenaline rush. Your heart rate beats between 115 and 145 bpm.

Finally, there’s the yellow condition which is considered the highest level of awareness. Here the SEAL is relaxed, their heart rate is normal at 100 bpm. When in the yellow condition, make sure that you are still aware of eveything occuring around you. Then, adapt to the circumstances, decide on the most appropriate move, and act on it.

Why Do You Want to Live?

Another way that Navy SEALs are able to conquer the terrain is by triggering the consciousness. They remember the thing that makes them want to live and don’t give up. One of the best secrets to trigger the conscious mind is to continuously put oneself in difficult situations until the mind gets used to it.

In Moments of Danger, Control Your Body’s Natural Response

When we are faced with danger our body tends to react by releasing stress hormones. As a result, the palms start sweating, the heart rate increases, some people can become speechless or motionless, and you start thinking a lot of things at the same time. Navy seals have to learn to use this to their advantage. They have to control the emotional arousal. One way that they do this is by practicing combat breathing.

Focus on One Objective at a Time

Navy SEALs are trained to focus on the small victories every day. Each day, they have to push harder than the previous day and make sure that they achieve their mark for that day. It’s the little victories that eventually contribute to the big one.

Fear is Not an Option

Navy SEALs have to go through one of the most intensive military training in the world. Throughout the entire period, they are taught the importance of keeping confident and staying positive. The right mindset can accomplish every task at hand. In the end, that’s what allows SEALs face unimaginable situations and not only survive, but defeat the opponent.

Summon The Spirit of Hooyah

This saying is meant to boost morale. When a navy seal says it, they acknowledge their responsibilities. They won’t make any excuses or complain because they have a duty to the country, family, friends, colleagues, and themselves. Hooyah reminds the seals that they are not alone in the battlefield. With teamwork, they can do so much more.

So Navy SEALs use…

…these seven strategies to overcome tough obstacles in their training and on the battlefield. YOU can use the same strategies to motivate yourself in case you’re having trouble achieving certain objectives.
